‘Tis the season to be jolly, and, at Christmas time, your conservatory can really come into its own, serving as a hub for family life during the festive season while providing welcome extra space if you have more people around than usual.

You could even put up overnight guests in your conservatory or orangery, or enjoy Christmas dinner in it. (If you’re eating in your conservatory, don’t forget plain white or bold red candles.)

Most likely, though, your extension will be used for those long afternoons when you sit around eating, drinking, opening presents and generally just enjoying each other’s company. And if it means you get a TV-free zone where you can chat or play games in peace, so much the better.

Why not make the most of your home improvement at this special time of year by adding some seasonal decorations?

Here are some tips to help:

  • Let there be light (and warmth)

It’s a fairly safe bet that the weather outside will indeed be frightful. Make your conservatory cosy with heaters or electric fires and add white fairy lights to create a space everyone will love. If you add outdoor lights in your garden, too, including lanterns or, again, fairy lights, you’ll be able to take in the illuminated view.

Thinking about the windows, this could be a good time to update your blinds, perhaps with a bold splash of colour to warm up your conservatory or orangery. You’ll feel the benefit long after Christmas is all over.

Try putting lights around the top of the extension, where the windows and roof meet, or frame each window pane for a Christmas log cabin vibe.

Hosting a festive soiree and expecting guests to spill into the conservatory? Chaser lights are one idea for creating a party feel. For something a bit more elegant, fill an oversized vase with baubles and lights for a sophisticated Christmas accessory.

  • Place your tree here

At Christmas time, wherever you set up the tree tends to become the home’s seasonal focal point. If it’s a real tree, in a conservatory it’s a nod to the garden outside, blending nature and your home’s interior. What’s more, the room will be naturally pine scented.

Another idea is to let children or grandchildren decorate their own, smaller tree in the conservatory, while keeping the ‘main’ one further inside the house.  Don’t forget to pop a small gift underneath!  You could start a whole new family tradition. Kids can also keep their advent calendars in the conservatory.

Lights, decorations and the gifts under the tree will make the place seem as exciting and enchanting as Santa’s grotto.

Finally, with space often at a premium at this time of year, use the conservatory to display Christmas cards. You’ll keep them tidy and in one place while you’re at it. Place in special holders, or attach to strings of tinsel.
