Whatever your conservatory is being used for, the chances are you’ll want to enjoy it as often as possible, and that means all year round, whatever the weather. And while much of the discussion on conservatory temperature focuses on staying snug in winter months, you may also want to think about keeping your extension comfortably cool during the height of summer.
Given the amount of glass in the roof and walls of most conservatories, the temperature inside can get quite high during the day when the sun shines. (Equally, if someone is sleeping there overnight, after dark the temperature can plummet.) So, with the British climate being as variable as it is, you will have to bear in mind from the outset how you will keep your home improvement at a comfortable, constant temperature.
Internal blinds for your conservatory are one solution, and can help to keep off the worst of the sun’s glare while also providing some additional insulation if that is an issue. However, they can also absorb heat and transmit it back into the space, causing a ‘greenhouse’ effect if the weather is especially hot.
So through-ventilation will probably be more effective. Think permanent vents at various levels of the conservatory. And, at the risk of stating the obvious, get a good airflow through the conservatory by opening doors and windows while you’re at home. You could also install a portable fan.
A special film is also available which is applied to the glass to reduce glare and keep you and your furniture safe from the sun’s UV rays. The sun’s energy is reflected away from your structure so your conservatory stays pleasantly comfortable.
Finally, air conditioning will always be a pricy option, indeed probably the most expensive to install and run, but it will certainly be effective. Some units, though, are eco-friendly and can heat as well as cool, making them very versatile, so shop around.
