This may have happened to you – you see a house advertised as a having a ‘spacious conservatory’ so you book a viewing. Too often, that ‘spacious conservatory’ turns out to be a rather oddly decorated, underused and strangely furnished room with little bearing on the rest of the house, tacked almost randomly to its side.

However wanted these extensions were originally, all too often, especially over time, conservatories are made to feel separate from the rest of the house. They become a sort of wasteland of computers, pet beds, ironing boards and mismatched furniture.

Yet given the premium placed on any kind of extra space in a home, your conservatory or orangery shouldn’t be a neglected area, especially if you are selling up. Make it a much-loved, integral part of your property.

The good news is that seamless integration doesn’t have to be difficult, or even very time-consuming. Here are some tips:

  • Have consistent decorative and colour schemes in the conservatory and the main building of your home. Having the same flooring in both is a good way of blurring the boundaries between the two. Equally, if you have similar colour schemes throughout, this also aids unity.
  • Throws, chair coverings and throws can also match up, and this helps create a space you want to spend time in.
  • If you ensure consistency of temperature, keeping your extension warm in winter and cool in summer, again that will create a seamless extension. Conservatories can otherwise sometimes feel too hot or too cold, and there may be a stark contrast when you enter it from the main structure.

Finally, you may want to think about a solid rather than a glass roof for your conservatory, so that the extension doesn’t just feel tacked on to your house. Team it up with glass walls and bifold doors, and you’ll create a stunning room. Solid roofs also provide excellent insulation, and help with temperature regulation.
