Spring is in the air, bringing it with it the welcome longer days and lighter evenings, and balmier temperatures. For most of us, it’s a lovely season.

It’s certainly a good time to be in your conservatory or orangery, but it’s also a good point in the year to do a spot of thorough spring cleaning, especially if your extension has been somewhat neglected over the winter months. So choose a particularly fine day, grab mops, brooms and dusters and follow our easy guide to sprucing up your home improvement. The good news is that you can clean your conservatory in one go – and giving the place a once-over needn’t be difficult.

Inside

Kick off by opening the windows to give your conservatory a good airing, and remove all cushions, rugs, throws, blankets and other soft furnishings and give them a thorough beating outdoors. Wash anything in the machine that you can. Then dry things outside on a line if possible. That also gives you more space as you tackle the rest of the room.

Clean windows with an eco-friendly product and spotless cloth to remove finger prints, dust and other grime. Next polish all your hard furnishings to get rid of dust, water marks, mug rings and the like.

Finally, give the floor of your conservatory a thorough sweep and mop. Then you can bring back your soft furnishings, perhaps rearranging things a bit for a fresh new look.

Outside

Clearly there’s no point having the interior of your conservatory and orangery looking spotless if the exterior has been ignored.

Arm yourself with a good, strong ladder and telescopic brush, a bucket of warms, soapy water and a few cloths. Clear out the gutters before you do anything else, ridding them of the leaves and other gunk that will have amassed over the winter.

Next, clean the framework of your conservatory, then the glass. Work your way down from top to bottom so that you are not cleaning the same spot more than once. Use just a soft sponge and warm soapy water rather than strong and potentially harmful chemicals that could strip the metal framework’s coating.

Clean the glass using window cleaning solution plus a soft cloth, again working in a methodical way so that the glazing doesn’t streak. You can even use a window wiper to leave the outside of your windows really spotless and shining.

Now you can sit back, relax with a well-earned cuppa (or something stronger) and enjoy your refreshed space while looking forward to all the quality time you’ll be spending in it during the spring and summer.
