Once you’ve decided to create extra living space without the hassle and expense of moving by adding a conservatory, you’ll want to think about its interior décor and colour scheme.
You need to bear in mind that your conservatory isn’t the same as any other room in your house but there are specific considerations to be taken into account.
For example, glass windows replace painted or papered walls to a large extent, so, as it grows dark each day, light tones become darker, as a side-effect of so much natural light getting in. This needs to be taken into account as you make your choices.
Personal taste will also play a huge part in your decisions, as will the size of the room, what it’s being use for and who by.
If you have a high ceiling, for example, and a lot of floor space, you have the option to have darker tones if you wish, since more of the conservatory will be made up of glass, so there’ll be more light filling your extension.
However, many of the householders we work with across Worthing, Lancing, Shoreham and elsewhere tend to go for light or pastel schemes in their home improvements. This creates an airy effect as natural light bounces off these paler colours and all over the room, lighting up anything in a similar tone and creating an illusion of greater space.
You may want to think about having a warmer cream shade for your walls instead of pure white. This will stop the room from feeling too bright when it’s very sunny, and make it a more inviting place to relax in.
At the same time, you may want to consider pairing neutral walls with bright furniture or soft furnishings for a nice contrast, for example with cushions adding a bold splash of colour.
Darker colours will absorb light as well as heat. That means, unless you have fitted UV glass or blinds in your extension, your dark floors will become very hot to work over in bare feet at the height of summer.
Finally, think about the colour scheme you have throughout the rest of our home, and try and make it a natural step from the palette of the house as you move into your conservatory.
