A survey of UK conservatory owners conducted by consumer group Which? found that the vast majority (89%) of respondents paid what they were originally quoted for their home improvement. The study was carried out nearly a year ago and surveyed almost 900 of the organisation’s members.
More than half of respondents also said they would not have done anything differently with their conservatory.
Even among those who did pay more than originally estimated, in most cases the sum added to their bill was under £500.
At Worthing Windows, we’re very clear that the price you quote is what you pay, so there are no unpleasant surprises at the end of the process.
But of course finances are always important, so what are the things you can do to keep the expense of a new conservatory to a minimum?
Clearly, you have to find the right company to work with and do your research thoroughly. Here are a few other points:

  • Design

Your chosen conservatory type can significantly affect how much you spend, so give it, and your budget, some serious thought before you settle on a design.
For example, inevitably a substantial, open plan orangery which has a lot of brickwork will be more expensive than a straightforward lean-to conservatory made from glass and accessible through an existing back door.

  • Materials

Most respondents to the poll for Which? said their conservatory was neither too hot nor too cold. But it’s worth thinking about the materials chosen, so that your home improvement stays at the perfect temperature all year round.
The ratio of glass to brickwork is one example of a key materials choice. This could be a big help in terms of regulating your extension’s temperature and making it feel a more integral part of your home.
Even within glass, there are decisions to be made – from thermally efficient to self-cleaning glazing – and your choice could affect how you use your conservatory.

  • Heating

Heating is another consideration which will inevitably affect price, whether you plump for ceiling fans or underfloor heating. Think about how hot or cold you are likely to want your conservatory to be, and whether you definitely want all-year use.
